KEY STAGE 5:

BTEC Level 3 National in Health and Social Care - Extended Certificate (360 GLH):


A broad basis of study for the health and social care sector. This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A-Levels.


Unit 1 (90 GLH) Human Lifespan Development:

Learners cover physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing. This is an externally assessed unit.


Unit 2 (120 GLH) Working in Health and Social Care:

Learners explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles ad responsibilities of workers and organisations. This is an externally assessed unit.


Unit 5 (90 GLH) Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs:

Learners focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individual care and support needs which are the foundation of all the care disciplines.


Unit 11 (60 GLH) Psychological Perspectives:

Learners explore the theoretical perspectives of psychological and physical development and how they are applied in different health and social care settings.


BTEC Level 3 National in Health and Social Care - Diploma (720 GLH) - This course is in the final year and only applicable to our current Year 13.


This qualification has been designed to account for two-thirds of a two-year, full time study programme for learners who are intending to go onto further education study in a related sector. It supports access to a range of higher education courses if taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A-Levels

In addition to the units studied for the Extended Certificate, learners will also study the following:


Unit 4 (120 GLH) Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care:

Learners explore the methodologies of contemporary research and investigate the implications for health and social care practice and services. This is a externally assessed controlled assessment.


Unit 7 (90 GLH) Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care:

Learners explore the importance of safe working practices, safeguarding procedures and responding to emergency situations in health and social care settings.


Unit 8 (90 GLH) Promoting Public Health:

Learners explore the aims of public health policy and the current approaches to promoting and protecting health and encouraging behaviour change in the population.


Unit 14 (60 GLH) Physiological Disorders and their Care:

Learners explore types of physiological disorders, the procedures for diagnosis, and the development of a treatment plan and provision pf support for service users.


BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Children's Play Learning and Development (320 GLH)


This is a new course for September 2023. The course will include the following units of work:


Year 12:

  • Unit 1 - Children's development (120 GLH) Exam

  • Unit 3 - Play and Learning (60 GLH)

Year 13:

  • Unit 2 - Development of Children's Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills (120 GLH) Exam

  • Unit 11 - The Early Years Foundation Stage (60 GLH)
