NE1 CAN is a programme of engagement and events bringing together cross-sector businesses, education and youth providers to deliver real life careers insight whilst raising aspiration and ambition within young people across our region.

THURSDAY 19TH JANUARY: Newcastle Building Society


09:30 – 15:00 - 1 Cobalt Park Way

Suitable for students:


  • In Year 11+

  • Considering an apprenticeship

  • Intrigued by what roles exist within a financial environment

  • Who would like to progress into employment with Newcastle Building Society


Newcastle Building Society are one of the largest employers operating here in the North East. Join us for a comprehensive day of learning and interaction as they give young people the opportunity to hear about apprenticeship opportunities soon to be advertised and help them to understand how to apply and just what they are looking for.


TUESDAY 31ST JANUARY: Live Theatre

Suitable for students:

  • 16+

  • Interested in the arts

  • Keen to understand how English relates to employability

  • Looking for direction in a competitive sector


Go behind the career scenes with NE1 CAN at the Live Theatre located on Newcastle’s Quayside. Broaden horizons and minds as we examine just what jobs are available in the theatre and arts including events, production, front of house, scriptwriting and more.


WEDNESDAY 1ST FEBRUARY: Prison Service

  • Who have no experience of the Civil Service

  • Looking for a career with internal progression


HM Prison Service employ a vast number of people to essentially help prisoners lead law abiding safe lives whilst serving sentences for criminal activity. Whilst our expectations of careers within this sector may be limited to prison officers jangling keys, join some of the team working right here in our region to discover the opportunities available for employment including dog handler and intelligence officer, amongst others


WEDNESDAY 8TH FEBRUARY: NHS, Mental Health Roles


09:30 – 11:30 - City Centre Venue TBC

  • Looking to explore careers within the NHS

  • Of various levels of academic ability

  • Who would like a rewarding career making a difference


Our partnership with the NHS continues as we bring students and staff together in a real life environment to gain understanding and hear stories about the day to day life of those working in a highly pressurised mental health environment.


WEDNESDAY 15TH FEBRUARY: O Agency, Graphic Design


9:30 – 11:00 - Old Brewery Court

Suitable for students:

  • 16+

  • Interested in the creative sector

  • Keen to get practical experience

  • Studying graphics


Following on from a brilliant event looking at What Is PR, we are back with award winning agency, O, to unpack a day in the life of their design team – from animation and digital content creation to illustration and graphic design. Participating in a live brief, students will bring their own creative ideas to the table and work alongside designers in the studio to bring their concept to life.


WEDNESDAY 1st MARCH: Go North East, Engineering


13:00 – 15:00 - Dunston Depot Sage

Suitable for students:

  • In Year 11 and 13

  • Seeking an engineering apprenticeship

  • Keen to see inside an engineering workshop

  • Who would like to speak to people ‘on the job’


Our Go North East events are always popular looking at the varied careers available within transport. This time we will take a small cohort of students along to the engineering workshop where buses are worked on, fixed and tested for MOT’s by the GNE team. This event is for students who wish to progress into engineering employment, potentially via an apprenticeship route.


WEDNESDAY 8TH FEBRUARY: NHS, Social Care Roles


13:30 – 14:30 - Digital Event


Suitable for students:

  • In all year groups

  • Keen to explore and gain understanding of careers within the NHS

  • Who would like to understand what social care entails

  • With a caring nature who would like to help others


The second of our events with the NHS in 2023 thus far, join us online as we hear about social care in general before exploring what roles and progression are available within this part of the NHS.


THURSDAY 16TH MARCH: Day of Inspiration


09:00 – 12:15 - City Centre Venue TBC

Suitable for students:

  • In Year 12+

  • Studying business

  • Interested in becoming an entrepreneur

  • Looking to be inspired by others


Join us as we bring together cross-sector entrepreneurs from across the North East who will candidly share their own stories of making it in the business world. Expect a diverse collection of people from product and service based industries at different stages of development within their own businesses including Anna Hedworth from the Cookhouse, Steven Forrest from Forfusion and the girls from YANA ACTIVE. With more speakers to be announced, this event is always fully booked so get your spaces fast
